Everyday you classify. Think about it. Sorting objects and putting them into specific places is classification! It's a way of organizing our world. Do you have a sock drawer in your dresser? How about a cabinet in your kitchen for storing cups and saucers? Do you collect baseball cards or stamps? If you do you have to organize them in some kind of order. That's classifying.
Animals too are classified in a variety of ways. This helps scientists to study the relationships in animal groups and to see the whole animal family tree as it has developed through time. Animals are found everywhere. We give names to each kind and we divide them into groups. Animals that have backbones are called vertebrates. We divide these animals into five groups: amphibians, birds, fish, mammals, and reptiles. Have you ever asked "What makes a bird a bird, or a reptile a reptile?

In this activity, you will use websites to research the differences among the five groups of vertebrates. Ask your teacher for a worksheet to fill out as you do your research or print one from the link below:
You will be creating an animal classification power point presentation. Your presentation will include animals from each of the five groups of vertebrates. Your presentation will also include a definition of each type of animal and at least one example of an animal in each classification.
You will work in groups of five. Each member of the group will be responsible for researching an animal in a different vertebrates category.
Below are all the links you will need to complete your project. Be sure to obtain a data form and powerpoint instructions from your teacher or click on the link below to print them.
1. Each member of the group should create a slide describing the category their animal belongs (Ex: Reptile, Amphibian, Fish, Mammal, or Bird)
Use the information from Task 2 (Vertebrates) to describe the characteristics of animals in this category.
2. Create a title slide with the title “Animal Kingdom”. Insert each member of the group's name on this slide.
3. Merge all presentations together.
